Okay, so from the offset it’s worth mentioning that I’ve been using Karchers for the last 15 odd years.. I’ve seen the change this company has undergone. From cornering the market by producing long lasting, high quality pressure washers.. to the current days low quality unreliable plastic scrap.
This is now the 4th K5 I’ve had in the last 3 years.. and guess what, this one is faulty and going back as well!!
My first Karcher lasted 11 years and when it finally passed away, I had gotten more than my monies worth out of it. I was so impressed with Karcher I went ahead and got the best model I could find: which was the K5 of 2017-18. Since then it’s been a never ending cycle of spare parts, sending back for exchanges etc etc. The one before this purchase lasted about 12 months with me only buying a new lance hose. Then about 2 weeks ago the motor stopped turning over. So I got a new one from Amazon. Differences noticed in this most recent release are mostly minimal aesthetic changes, but importantly the lance has also changed from the one thick lance that you could swivel to whatever pressure or flow you wanted.. to now there’s 2 lances included, both skinny and very flimsy. They don’t exactly come across as sturdy or long lasting.
Anyway I constructed the new K5 last night, with the intention of washing my car today. All set up with a new hose to boot.
Come this morning I turned it on and it worked brilliantly. Very high water pressure which was reminiscent of my last unit when I first got it. The difference between this and what my last unit had been pushing out the last few months is startling.
Anyway 6-8 minutes of rinsing my car down, and then suddenly the unit stops. As if the power has cut. I trace all wires and hoses. No issues. Suddenly after 3-4 minutes the motor whirls again, and we’re back in business. Or so I thought. 6-8 minutes later it cut out again.
This was then the pattern that followed for the next 3 hours of washing my car! Another unit which slipped through quality control.
I called the Amazon helpline. After being hold for 5 minutes (whilst they googled) I was told that this is intentional. The unit cuts out after 5 minutes of continuous use to allow the motor to cool down. Surely this can’t be right?? They’re going to contact Karcher on Monday to confirm, and then if confirmed the unit will go back where it came from.

I’ve already reviewed the basic Karcher K2 here – a great all rounder (if not quite up to heavy duty tasks) on sale at an excellent price, nothing much to dislike. Expectations with the K5 were therefore high, as this is after all a machine costing three times the price. That said, having now experienced the K5 in the flesh, it is hard to afford it a glowing recommendation as just too many corners have been cut.
I’ll gloss over performance as many here have already covered this in detail, suffice to say it is very good, though to my surprise, not quite as powerful as my old machine which is a 2200w rated Workzone, costing half the price. The Karcher is quiet in operation & powerful in performance. The varioblaster wand will remove almost all dirt from patios, driveways etc and the power control wand is excellent for items such as windows, furniture & cars, though I’d far prefer the older twist function to select the water pressure as three fixed settings is limiting and to be honest a bit of a gimmick.
So why then, only 3 stars?? Well my main gripe with the K5 boils down to VALUE which in my opinion is not great, more especially when compared to its more junior siblings (the K3&4 especially). Yes, the performance here is better and the K5 is certainly powerful, but the margins aren’t that great and the 3&4 also get the job done just fine. The K3 & 4 are also highly effective cleaners & a FULL K4 premium kit with all the extras can be bought for less than the basic K5. And therein resides my 2nd main gripe with the K5….that word “Premium”. Easy to miss, but important if you are looking for a device that is easy to use, easy to store. Much to my amazement the K5 has no wind in wheel function for the power hose, nor a winding base for the power supply (both only available on the more expensive premium model). For me, neither of these basic features should be deemed “premium” and this is a design error too far. Take the power hose for example, which at best is forever tangling and as you can see from the attached picture, its also nigh impossible to manually wind neatly in the absence of a handle. Same with with the power cord which in the case of the basic I’ve had to stuff it into the accessories net at the back of the machine as there is nowhere else for it to go! As the K4 Premium has both the Karcher Patio cleaner (which is a superb add-on) and both the power cable rest and power hose winder, for the same or even less money, I’d opt for it over this.
These basic design shortcomings alongside that hefty price tag make it hard for me to recommend this despite the overall excellent performance, so unless you opt for the even more expensive premium model, I’d recommend the far more wallet friendly (and only marginally inferior) K3 or K4, or even the K5 compact which I’ll be reviewing shortly .

I wish the hose pipe would come with a more flexible one as its a nightmare rapping it around the unit all the time, you are never able to store away nicely, then when you come to use it again, it’s 10mins to unwind it.

Delivered quickly washer works really well only problem I have is coiling the hose up. As yet I haven’t foundxan easy way to do it. Other than that it’s power adjustable lance makes easy work of washing my vehicles down quickly and easily.

Really great pressure washer
My old one was not up to the job so got this instead
Amazing workmanship
Built really well
Long pressure hose
Easy to operate nozzles
Really strong pressure
Not as loud as my old one
Long operation didn’t make it warm so the water cooling works well
Operates without interruptions
Love Bosch but they should stick to doing what they do best … This is so much better (yes and more expensive but it does the job)

Does a great job especially with some other attachments that are available, such as the Soap Dispenser, Patio Scrubber & the Car Shampoo Revolving Brush Head . The long Power Hose is a bit of a nuisance tho, as it’s always tangling up & it’s vitually impossible to use as per the instructions, which state it should be fed thru the hole at the front of the unit & also there is nowhere to easily store the power cable,
but overall it’s probably the best on the market & I’ve used a few different ones over the years in various jobs.
