I’ve been looking for a decent quality machine with a small counter footprint for use when guests come over and the odd weekend coffee (we aren’t regular enough coffee drinkers to justify having a large machine taking up kitchen space so this is a great option size wise).
Overall I’ve been very happy with it, visually it looks quite nice and is very neat. It is also super easy to use, you just add the recommended water to the jug depending on the type of drink you want to make, slot it behind the machine, then slide the lever on the top to choose whether you want a hot or cold drink (colour coded red or blue). If you want a hot drink you need to wait for the green light to come on before you add your capsule which is really easy. Then push the button to begin. You can make a coffee in a couple of minutes with this. You need to manually stop the machine when you feel your drink is ready and you’re happy with the water content.
The downside of this brand of machine is that the capsules are expensive, considerably more so than nespresso ones, and there isn’t the same choice available for compatible capsules from other brands as there would be from the likes of nespresso.
Another downside, and it’s a pretty big one, is the coffee never seems to get hot enough, you’re not able to control the heat, so if you like a really hot coffee, one that is usually made with boiling water, then you might be disappointed. One thing is for sure, you will need to drink this within a few minutes as it’ll quickly cool to lukewarm.

We opted for the Picolo XS simply because it was a basic machine with an easy peasy on/off function in either hot or cold so there’s less to go wrong.
We’ve had Dolce Gusto machines before but last year my wife was bored and ordered another brand machine, oh dear. After about a year of the other machine and it’s horrible coffee, and me constantly grumping about how awful it was, we finally purchased another Nescafe machine, and the angels came down from heaven and, not really it wasn’t that kind of moment but Nescafe coffee pods produce, in my eyes, the best coffee……ever.
If you’re looking for your first machine or looking for a change in brand you’ll not go wrong with any of the Dolce Gusto machines and/or Nescafe coffee pods and I personally think you’ll not be disappointed.

This is the 3rd Dolce Gusto Machine I have in the last 5 years. THe original one (with the aluminum top for inserting the pods) was bigger but better built (but the pump failed). The second was very plasticky. Then this one. WIth the passing of time I can see that the product is getting smaller and the initial quality bits are gone. This latest incarnation is all plastic and it is dinkier but… also much noisier. The pump for the hot water is very noisy compared with the whirring of the first Dolce Gusto I bought. So coffee always great, no need to turn on the machine – this one wakes up when you put the pod inside. Great. But that’s it. Love the coffee but these product are declining in quality. Just you know.

This is great value. So simple and quick to use. Great functionality. Great flavours. Idiot proof too. Such a game changer.
