Was skeptical as my petrol mower has huge heavy roller on it, so I thought there’s no way this push along will do stripes. Well as you can see, it does! Impressed. And it cuts really well, the grass in photo was wet too, no problems for the Bosch. Recommended.

Where do I start? Arrived today – 5* but then it all went pear shaped. It is not the simplest thing to put together. Nothing seems logical and you can forget the diagrams. Once together and basket (haha) mounted the machine needs constant to-ing and fro-ing to even cut grass that is 2 to 3 inches long. Once you have done that without it constantly skidding on its cylinder and rear roller, you remove the basket because it is worse than useless, hardly collected a single blade!! Proceed mowing without basket and you would still rather slash your wrists or hang yourself from the nearest tree (silver birch in my case). Seriously though, as many other comments have already said, this piece of kit doesn’t warrant the name of Qualcast let alone Bosch. Any easy to please German will throw this in the Rhine PDQ. In my case, the Arun!! Yes it is light and manoeuvarable but so are a pair of hand shears – they would work better. Cannot believe any positive comments posted are genuine. Had hoped to get rid of either my corded Atco or petrol Hayter, however, one will have to go off for an expensive overhaul. Something I had honestly hoped to avoid. DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT give this item even a second’s consideration. Amazon/Bosch will be hearing from me.

When I bought this mower, half the reviews were negative (hard to assemble – requires an “engineering degree”, doesn’t cut properly, basket is useless, etc) and the other half were glowing (easy to assemble, works great, leaves stripes, etc). To me, this was the sign that only half the people were using it correctly!

    1. Assembly: easy

Given the complaints about the assembly, I expected it to arrive in small pieces… Lo and behold, the chassis and blades arrive already assembled. You just need to attach the handle, which comes in 2 pieces and takes exactly 4 bolts to assemble. Very easy. I admit that the schematics don’t have an IKEA level of detail, but they are clear enough and with a bit of common sense I feel like it is really obvious what goes where.

I did use my own spanner which was better than the cheap one provided but I don’t think it made a big difference. I mean, it was only 4 bolts… The handle then clips into the chassis. 2 more bolts at the back for the basket attachment and you’re done. Total time: 10 minutes.

    2. Blade adjustment

I think most of the bad reviews are down to bad (or inexistent) blade adjustment. I am not talking about the cutting height, which is adjusted by moving the roller up or down. This is about adjusting the distance between the blades and the chassis.

It is important to understand that the blades do not simply “hack” the grass. The mower works like a pair of scissors! The rotating blades are half the scissors, and the bottom of the chassis is the other half. For the shearing to work, the blades must therefore lightly brush against the bottom of the chassis. Otherwise, it is like trying to cut with scissors whose blades do not touch — that won’t work at all!

There are two knobs controlling the blade position. The mower will arrive with the knobs too tight (so the blade doesn’t rotate in transport), so you’ll need to loosen them, then adjust them both until you can hear a very light and continuous brushing on the whole length of the blade.

    3. Cutting action: great

Properly adjusted, this cuts great and leaves nice stripes. Tip: the blades are not centered because of the spring pushing them to the right. This means you can use a smaller overlap if you do your passes turning right rather than turning left.

I also found that the basket collected most (but not all) of the grass. It gets full quite quicky and, unless you push the clippings down, it will tend to overflow back in the blades.

    4. Tidying away: small footprint

The handle is easy to detach since it is just clipped, but I leave it on because they actually hold vertically. No need to put it against a wall. The footprint is only the size of the chassis.

Conclusion: great mower, great price (bought at £59.99).

    Great!
    TOP TIP.
If you’re mowing your lawn you’d be better off buying a manual and leaving the grass cuttings in place rather than removing them. Removing them you’re actually removing ‘goodness’ from the garden each time you mow. Leaving them in situ allows the soil to stay more moist in the summer months, preventing evaporation but in the other months helps to prevent weed growth. During spring it is a good idea to rake off the dead thatch (grass cuttings) allowing the new growth and soil to breath.

Full marks for this little mower from Bosch! It’s a lovely little machine that does the job. Was a little concerned about the putting together but needn’t have been- its all very straightforward, quick and easy. Everything you need is in a little packet with instructions in the box along with the large sections of the mower itself. The mower worked beautifully from the off. There is a technique to easy cutting with this which just seems to click in as you go – hopefully that will make sense! It cuts low too (you can change the cutting level if need be) and very neatly. If used without the grass collector basket (which is, admittedly, a little cumbersome) any grass left in the lawn is shredded into tiny pieces and not untidy but easy to collect up if a perfectionist! Furthermore, this mower makes a lovely, low whirring noise whilst going around which is amazingly lulling and relaxing! – quite different from the hideous noise of its electric/petrol counterparts! The mower is not cumbersome/heavy and easy to store too. In my opinion a really good purchase, certainly no regrets and a very good price from Amazon. Very pleased indeed. Well packaged with excellent Amazon delivery.
