Features of the cross line laser level explained
Self-levelling function
The self-levelling function ensures that the laser lines are always aligned horizontally or vertically. However, this only works if there is a slight incline, otherwise the inner pendulum will hit the inside of the unit and it will no longer be able to align itself automatically.
High-quality models even give a warning when the adjustable range is exceeded. This can be signalled, for example, by a pulsating laser line or even by a complete switch-off.
However, there are also cross line lasers that do not have a self-levelling function, which must then be laboriously brought into balance with a tripod or similar. At this point, we can only recommend cross line lasers that have a self-levelling function.
Tilt function / locking function
If you are interested in a cross line laser with a self-levelling function (recommended by us), you must also pay attention to a tilt function or locking function.
This function fixes the pendulum inside and thus allows the projected line to be aligned at an angle. This prevents the pendulum from wobbling back and forth inside.
If this function were not present, either warnings would be displayed or the laser line would always wobble back and forth a little. This is of course somewhat counterproductive for exact measuring.
The range / working range
The range indicates how many metres away you can still measure reasonably. The range is referred to as the working range or the laser measurement distance. Of course, manufacturers can also use other terms for the range.
When specifying the working range, you must bear in mind that it is a diameter specification. Therefore, the actual range (from the laser to you) is half of the working range. However, this only applies if it is a 360 degree cross line laser, otherwise the working range is the same as the reach.
In addition, there are no standards to determine the range for the eye. Some manufacturers from China take advantage of this and make the range a little more generous.
By the way, you can increase the range considerably with a compatible receiver. Moreover, the indication “range with receiver” is not so easy to embellish.
The receiver mode
In order to use a receiver with your cross line laser, it must have a pulse or receiver mode. This changes the frequency of the laser so that it can be measured by the receiver. Ironically, this makes it less visible to humans, but much easier to see with laser glasses.

The laser beam: number of axes / number of degrees

Not all cross-line lasers are the same, and this is particularly noticeable with the laser lines. There are clear differences between the number of degrees and the number of axes.
The number of degrees indicates how far the laser line extends around the device. With a 360-degree laser, it would be once completely around the unit.
With the horizontal line, this would mean that the laser line is beamed to every wall. By the way, you can recognise a 360 degree laser by the small domes that are on the sides of the device.
A device with fewer degrees, on the other hand, has a glass panel on the front and top. If the cross line laser does not have 360 degrees, you can usually estimate from the product photos how many degrees the cross line laser has.
The number of axes indicates how many laser lines the cross line laser projects. The usual cross line lasers project a horizontal and vertical line. Thus, a cross is formed in front of the device, which is why the measuring device got the name cross line laser, by the way.
However, many manufacturers give their cross line lasers another axis. This is often another vertical line that is offset 90 degrees from the existing vertical line.


If the cross line laser has 3 axes and 360 degrees, laser line crosses are formed in all directions. This means in front of, behind, above, to the left and to the right of the cross line laser.
A few models even have a fourth axis, which in most cases is another parallel horizontal line. In our opinion, however, you need a maximum of 3 axes, each additional laser line cannot do any harm, but unnecessarily increases the price of the device.
Plumb point / reference point

If your cross line laser has the “plumb point” function, it is much easier to position the cross line laser at the same place again.
This is because the cross line laser throws a laser point onto the floor and/or ceiling. If you now mark this point with a pencil, you will be able to set up the cross line laser in exactly the same place again and again.
This function does not actually have a specific name, so the term reference point can also be used for this feature.
In most cases, you can see from the product pictures whether the cross line laser throws the plumb point to the ceiling and/or floor.
You can also see this relatively simply on the device itself; if there is a small disc directly on and or under the device, this is in most cases exactly this function.
A special feature is the 360 degree cross line laser with 3 levels. These automatically have a plumb line or reference point. Simply draw the laser cross with a pencil above or on top of the device. In this way, you have also marked the direction in which the cross line laser is located.
The power supply
There are 4 ways in which a cross line laser can be powered: AA batteries, AA rechargeable batteries, integrated rechargeable batteries and exchangeable rechargeable batteries. Each of these options has its advantages and disadvantages.
1. AA Batteries

A cross line laser which is operated with normal AA batteries is in principle always ready for use. If the batteries run out, you can buy new ones at any kiosk and replace the old ones with the new ones.

2. Rechargeable AA batteries

AA batteries are also available as rechargeable batteries. This combines the advantages of AA batteries with the advantages of rechargeable batteries. Unlike AA batteries, AA rechargeable batteries can be recharged in a recharging station.
And if the AA batteries are empty, you can simply replace them with full AA batteries or revert to the old familiar AA batteries. However, there are some cross line lasers that cannot be operated with AA batteries.
Therefore, you should read the product description and the reviews to find out whether it can also be operated with AA batteries. If nothing is mentioned there, you can ask the manufacturer.
Another disadvantage of AA batteries is that you have to buy several of these AA batteries and a charging station. In addition, you usually have to charge the batteries every night. If you forget to do this, you can simply use normal AA batteries as usual.

Use of a cross line laser level

Our tip for use is to dismantle the device only when all the work is done. In practice, it turns out to be extremely complicated to align everything exactly as it was at the beginning.
Alternatively, you can draw markings on the wall using the laser line to avoid having to set everything up again.

The IP degree of protection

Most cross line laser levels advertise an IP54 certification. This means that the cross line laser is protected against dust and splash water.
The first number after the IP, in our case 5, indicates the degree of protection against foreign bodies. The second number indicates the degree of protection against water.
In our case this would be 4, which means that the cross line laser is protected against splash water from all directions.
The higher the numbers, the better the protection. However, the first number is not an indication of how robust the device actually is.
A device like ours cannot be damaged by touch or dust. However, if you drop the device or apply a lot of pressure, it can be damaged. In addition, the certification expires if the housing is damaged.

Which degree of protection is right for you depends on the environment in which you want to use the cross line laser level. If you are only using it in your own home, for example, you do not need an IP rating at all.

Tripod

The tripod is one of the most important accessories for a cross line laser, because it allows you to move the horizontal laser line up or down.
In addition, a tripod provides a straight base for the cross line laser so that the laser lines are thrown straight at the wall.
When buying a tripod, make sure that the threaded mount fits the thread (usually a 1/4inch thread) of the cross line laser.
